The Ugly Duckling opened in Newbury town centre in summer 2017 and is a popular family friendly pottery painting coffee house with a relaxed atmosphere. You can go along and get your caffeine fix whilst exploring your creative side!
There is a wide selection of pottery to choose from and it’s suitable for all ages & abilities. They even hold regular ‘adult only’ nights if you fancy a bit of child free time! The staff are friendly, helpful and informative. They can help you capture those precious tiny hand & footprints, show you effective techniques to get the best outcome for your pottery and help you with writing on your pieces. The turnaround time for collecting your pottery is 7 days but if you can’t make it back to collect a finished piece then there is a fun ‘foam clay’ alternative which dries in 30 minutes so you can take it away on the same day! You don’t need to be an artist to get creative and produce your masterpiece but if you don’t fancy doing something yourself then The Ugly Duckling has a commissions artist who can create your piece for you.
The Adult Only Painting Nights take place every other Wednesday and every other Friday from 6pm-9.30pm and you can take your own bubbly & nibbles to make the most of the child free zone. Children’s workshops are held during the school holidays and birthday parties are also provided by The Ugly Duckling.
We took our 4 year old for a painting session and she loved painting a ladybird. It kept her occupied and we were able to enjoy a great coffee while she was busy creating her masterpiece. The Ugly Duckling is a great place to go if you’re looking for somewhere to catch up with friends; it’s breast feeding friendly and it has all the facilities you need when you have little ones in tow including high chairs, toilets and baby changing facilities. There’s a wide range of hot & cold drinks available as well as delicious treats with vegan and gluten free options. It can get very busy (especially during the school holidays!) so booking is advisable if you’d like to go for a painting session.
